Ukraine

Eisenhower Warned Us
By Steven J. Grisafi, PhD.

There was a simple solution to the Ukraine Crisis that nobody has wanted to consider. In the aftermath of the Great Recession of 2007, when Greece found itself unable to pay its debts to German and French banks, Professor Joseph Stieglitz of Columbia University remarked that an alternative to Greece leaving the Euro Zone would be for Germany to leave it. The concern the Russian Federation has toward NATO is due to the fact that NATO is the American Sphere of Influence.

America appears not to have learned the lesson from our mistake supplying the Afghan mujaheddin with weaponry during their war against the Soviet Union in the 1980’s. We supplied them with weaponry that eventually was used against us. I suspect that a large fraction of the weaponry we are now sending to the Ukraine will enter into the black market to be used eventually in other conflicts within Asia and Africa. I understand why Congress is so eager to spend the People’s money on this weaponry. It is a boon for business of the defense industry. President Eisenhower warned us about this.

NATO has a membership of 30 nations. Its population, excluding that of the United States, is three times as large as that of the Russian Federation. The Ukraine conflict has demonstrated that the Soviet era conventional weaponry of the Russian Federation is vastly inferior to the advanced weaponry possessed by the United States and NATO. The Russians have simply been too poor to be able to spend money on the advanced weaponry NATO has developed. While they have maintained their nuclear capability, the Russian Federation is far too weak an adversary to oppose NATO, even if the United States were not a member. Since Anthony Blinken and Jens Stoltenberg were determined to maintain an open door policy for NATO, the most efficacious solution to the security concerns for both the Russian Federation and all of its neighbors would have been for the United States to withdraw from NATO.

China and India together comprise more than one third of the world’s population. NATO is about one tenth of the world’s population. Ninety percent of the world’s people do not view the Ukraine conflict as do the American people. We were wrong to send weapons to the Ukraine. If America were not part of NATO the Russians would not be concerned about the Ukraine joining NATO.
